About Axios Delta National Park

Axios Delta National Park, located in the northern part of Greece near the city of Thessaloniki, covers the expansive wetland formed at the mouth of the Axios River as it flows into the Thermaic Gulf. Encompassing coastal lagoons, marshes, reed beds, and sandy beaches, the park is a critical nesting and migratory stopover site for numerous bird species, including flamingos, herons, and migratory waterfowl. The park’s flat lowlands are home to a mix of freshwater and brackish ecosystems, supporting a rich variety of fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. Historically, the delta region has been influenced by both natural and human forces, with conservation efforts ramping up since the late 20th century to protect the vulnerable wetlands from urban expansion and agricultural pressures. Visitors to Axios Delta can engage in birdwatching tours, guided boat excursions, and wildlife photography. The nearby observatories and visitor centers provide educational exhibits explaining the ecological significance of the wetlands and the park's conservation initiatives. For nature enthusiasts and researchers alike, Axios Delta National Park presents a prime example of Mediterranean wetland biodiversity and is recognized as a Ramsar Site of international importance. The mix of coastal habitats, accessible trails, and proximity to Thessaloniki make it an appealing destination for both casual visitors and dedicated birders.
